Exceptional Young Musicians Perform With Festival Professionals

On Sunday January 22nd, some of the leading musicians from the Southwell Music Festival are leading a workshop day and concert with Midlands-based talented young musicians. In a day jointly organised by the Festival and by the national Charity, Awards for Young Musicians, three young musicians will be coached on solo and chamber pieces, and present a concert at the end of the day.

Awards for Young Musicians exists to support gifted young players by removing financial and access barriers that prevent them from achieving their ambition to excel in making music. The Charity is supported by such international names as Julian Lloyd Webber and Dame Evelyn Glennie. The three young musicians involved in this day are all Midlands residents who have won Awards with AYM this year:

Annie McChrystal is a thirteen-year-old pianist who comes from Leicester.

Hing Tim Fung is a fourteen-year-old violinist from Twocester.

Katharine Ley is a sixteen-year-old cellist from Cleethorpes.

The event, also supported by Southwell Minster and the Heritage Lottery Fund, will include an open coaching session, in the State Chamber of the Archbishop’s Palace, between 2.00pm and 4.00pm – free admission – and then a concert at 7.30pm in the Minster, when the young musicians will perform solo pieces and a group piece, and the professional musicians will perform Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D Minor.

The Festival Musicians featured are Jamie Campbell, Violin, and the Festival’s Associate Artistic Director; Libby Burges, Piano; and Nathaniel Boyd, Cello.

Tickets for the evening concert are £12 (under 18 free, but please obtain a ticket), and are available from the Southwell Cathedral Shop (01636 812933), or by contacting guyscottturner@gmail.com
